Now, with the release of the Wio-E5-LE wireless module, we’re relaunching this program to reignite the spirit of innovation. The design does not need to be open-sourced and production files will not be shared with the public (unless you want to). Wio-E5 and Wio-E5-LE: Low-Power IoT Solutions

Wio-E5 is the first System on Chip (SoC) that combines a remote RF integrated circuit (SX126X) with an embedded single-mode MCU (STM32WLE5JC). Compared to the Wio-E5, the Wio-E5-LE module reduces transmission power consumption by 84%. Its ultra-low power consumption makes it highly energy-efficient, making it the ideal choice for applications that demand minimal power usage.

They are highly versatile and suitable for a wide range of low-power, wide-area IoT applications, including smart agriculture, wireless meter reading, and smart city solutions. With the built-in AT command firmware, developers can easily create prototypes or applications.

Wio-E5 PCBA Designs from The Community

Design 1: Stream Runoff Monitoring Sensors Powered by Wio-E5 Designed by Former Ph.D. Researcher from Oregon State University

William Dillon harnessed the low power efficiency of Wio-E5 to create a stream runoff monitoring sensor. This sensor measures the volume, temperature, and quality of river runoff for an entire year, correlating water resistance with fish survival and growth.

Design 2: Loko – The Smallest GPS Tracker with Built-in Wio-E5 Module

Tomi Piriyev, the driving force behind the Loko project, used certified Wio-E5 to create LOKO. It boasts its radio transmitter and is tailor-made for remote, hard-to-reach places like mountains, forests, and oceans. Loko tracks vital equipment and vehicles, from drones and pricey machinery to wildlife and farm animals.

Design 3: NENA™ – LoRa® Ship Monitoring System Based on Wio-E5

NENA™ is a device that monitors unattended anchored and docked boats for excessive roll/pitch angles due to unexpected weather conditions, anchor drift, and boat intruders. Onboarded with several sensors to measure targeted factors, the device will send alert notifications immediately to the boat owner whenever abnormal conditions are detected.

Design 4: DirectMessage – Private Communication Device

This is a LoRa® navigation system based on a P2P network, integrated with the Wio-E5 wireless module. Similar to a two-way pager, directMessage offers a range of advanced features, including live navigation and sharing of location, altitude, and attitude.
